A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, leaving widespread destruction and more than 1,600 people dead. The disaster, among the strongest earthquakes in a century for the region, severely impacted airports, bridges, and highways, exacerbating the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country.
Massive Loss of Life and Infrastructure Damage
The official death toll in Myanmar has risen to 1,644, according to BBC Burmese, while nine fatalities have been reported in Thailand. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) warns that the final toll could exceed 10,000 as rescue operations continue.
Rescue Efforts Amidst Desperation
In Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, survivors dug through rubble with their bare hands, desperately trying to free those trapped beneath collapsed buildings. Authorities were largely absent, and the lack of heavy machinery hindered rescue efforts.
In Bangkok, Thailand, a 33-story high-rise under construction collapsed, with 47 people still missing. Search teams are using drones, excavators, and rescue dogs in a race against time to locate survivors.
Myanmar Junta Allows International Aid
Amid growing devastation, Myanmar’s military rulers have permitted foreign rescue teams into the country. Nations including China, Russia, India, Malaysia, and Singapore have sent rescue personnel and aid. The United States, despite strained relations with Myanmar’s military regime, has pledged assistance.
Foreign Aid Arrives in Myanmar
- China has sent $13.77 million worth of aid, including medical kits, tents, and blankets.
- India has dispatched military aircraft with relief supplies, including 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid.
- Russia, Malaysia, and Singapore have sent planeloads of emergency relief.
- South Korea has pledged $2 million in initial humanitarian aid.
Myanmar’s Airports and Bridges Crippled
An initial assessment found that at least 2,900 buildings, 30 roads, and seven bridges were severely damaged. The control tower at Naypyitaw International Airport collapsed, rendering it inoperable. Mandalay International Airport has also been temporarily shut down due to structural damage.
The Search for Survivors Continues
Residents in hardest-hit areas report no rescue efforts, with many still trapped under the rubble. The junta’s response has been criticized as slow and ineffective, leaving thousands of families without aid.
Meanwhile, in Thailand, authorities fear up to 5,000 buildings in Bangkok may have sustained damage, raising concerns about further collapses.
Conclusion
As Myanmar and Thailand grapple with one of the deadliest earthquakes in recent history, relief efforts continue. However, with thousands still missing and critical infrastructure in ruins, the true scale of the disaster remains unknown.
The world watches as emergency responders work tirelessly to provide aid, but the long road to recovery has only just begun.
