R&B singer Sean Kingston and his mother, Janice Turner, have been found guilty of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a $1 million fraud trial. The verdict was delivered on Friday, March 28, following a highly publicized court case.
Legal Verdict and Sentencing
A jury convicted Kingston, 35, and Turner, 62, on all counts. As a result:
- Turner was immediately taken into federal custody until sentencing.
- Kingston has been placed under house arrest and must post a surety bond of a $500,000 home and $200,000 in cash.
- Both are scheduled to be sentenced on July 11, 2025.
- The charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Background on the Case
Kingston and his mother were initially arrested in May 2024, accused of running a fraud scheme targeting multiple businesses.
During the trial:
- Turner admitted to sending fake wire transfers from her bank account, claiming she was protecting her son from being taken advantage of financially.
- Kingston chose not to testify in his own defense but had previously proclaimed his innocence on social media.
- Prosecutors revealed that the pair falsely represented bank wire payments to acquire luxury vehicles, jewelry, and other high-end goods without making full payments.
Kingston’s Response
In May 2024, Kingston took to Instagram, denying any wrongdoing:
“People love negative energy! I am good and so is my mother! My lawyers are handling everything as we speak.”
His legal team had also previously expressed confidence in a “successful resolution” of the case, though the guilty verdict now paints a different picture.
Rise and Fall of Sean Kingston
Kingston first rose to fame in 2007, known for hit songs such as:
- Beautiful Girls
- Take You There
- Fire Burning
- Collaboration with Justin Bieber on “Eenie Meenie”
Though Kingston continued making music and performing live, his legal troubles have overshadowed his career in recent years.
What’s Next?
With sentencing set for July, Kingston and his mother face a potential 20-year sentence. Whether they will receive the maximum penalty remains to be seen.
